Kevin Gates returns with his new EP Chained to the City, his first project since being released from prison earlier this year. Over the course of three tracks, the Baton Rouge rapper blends real-life storytelling with gritty melodies.

On “Change Lanes,” Gates reflects on his incarceration and “wrongful conviction,” and even vows to “f**k a Kardashian.” “Vouch” finds him reminiscing on growing up in New Orleans and his struggle to get signed (“Young Money closed the door and ain’t nobody want sign me”). The project closes with “Let It Sing,” a booming banger about trust issues.

Gates, who released By Any Means 2 while in prison, was released in January after serving nine months of a 30-month sentence for a weapons-related warrant.
