2015 is Sevyn Streeter’s year. After releasing her EP Call Me Crazy, But… in 2013, the singer-songwriter is readying her debut album On the Verge for release this year. While promoting the first single “Don’t Kill the Fun” featuring Chris Brown, Sevyn caught up with Rap-Up TV to discuss the long-awaited project.
“The album is like my baby that I’ve been holding for nine months and I’m ready to just release it to the world,” she said. “I didn’t want to put myself in a box and I wanted to just be really honest on every record, no matter how that came out. If I was sad or depressed or crying one day, which I was, I wrote a song about people who don’t make me feel like that.”
“I didn’t want to put myself in a box and I wanted to just be really honest on every record.”
In addition to “Don’t Kill the Fun,” the album includes the tracks “4th Street” and “Fight for Me.” “We experimented with a lot of different sounds and fused together a lot of different genres,” explained Sevyn. “You’ll hear a lot of that on the album. Come get lost in my world basically, ’cause me and my mind, musically we’re kinda like all over the place. That’s the vibe of the album.”
She collaborated with Ty Dolla $ign on the Cam Wallace-produced “Fallen,” for which she recently shot a video. “It’s kinda trippy, kinda vibey. We did a play on a classic song. Ty killed his part, Cam killed his part. I love the sounds.”
She and August Alsina also duet on “Been a Minute,” which the New Orleans crooner previewed on Instagram. “It’s a sexy little record and it’s really dope,” said Sevyn. “I loved the song when I did it. We always talked about doing a record together and he heard the record and he loved it. We’re both really in love with the record.”
In the meantime, Sevyn can be heard on “How Bad Do You Want It (Oh Yeah)” off the Furious 7 soundtrack.
