On Sunday (Sept. 1), GloRilla received the key to the city of Memphis on its unofficial day of celebration. She took the stage downtown with a performance of her hit “TGIF” at an all-day event dedicated to recognizing the community’s culture.
“Memphis made me; Frayser raised me. I got [the] key to my city. Happy 901 Day, Memphis!” GloRilla captioned her Instagram post. Megan Thee Stallion, K Carbon, Moneybagg Yo, Ludacris, and several others voiced their support in the comments section.
Gloss Up penned, “Congratulations! I’m proud of you! Watched you put in the work. You deserve it. Keep going up.” Lola Brooke simply wrote, “Proud,” while the Grammy nominee’s hair stylist said, “My baby got the key.”
In 2023, Drake was granted the same recognition, a nod to his father’s roots and the love he’s shown on tracks like “Under Ground Kings” and “Nonstop.” Shelby County Chairman Mickell Lowery emphasized, “You got a lot of Memphis blood in you, and you’re definitely touching the world.”
Meanwhile, Councilwoman Jana Swearengen-Washington said, "It's an honor to celebrate Drake's support of Memphis and Memphians in the heart of my district! We appreciate his music and his generous spirit! We truly soar in District 4!”
Around that time, fans questioned why the Canadian star was bestowed the honor over local legends like Yo Gotti, Young Dolph, Three 6 Mafia, and GloRilla. The “Tomorrow 2” star responded, “I got this key almost a year ago.”
GloRilla’s Ehhthang Ehhthang arrived in April with the previously loved “Yeah Glo!” as well as “All Dere” and “Wanna Be,” the latter of which saw her team up with Megan Thee Stallion.
“I was actually shy the first time I went around her,” she told VIBE about their relationship. “The second time, it just got more [comfortable]. We got some shots and stuff. It just felt natural.”
