Though a biopic isn’t in the works just yet, Brandy knows exactly who she’d want to play her: Halle Bailey. On Tuesday (Aug. 27), during an interview with A24, she named the fellow singer and actress as her top pick.
“There’s a few people that come to mind, but [off the] top of the dome, Halle Bailey,” the “Have You Ever?” artist said. Unfortunately, she didn’t go into detail about her choice, leaving social media to debate if it was the right call. “It’s the wide-set eyes, and Halle has that good girl vibe that Brandy has. Sweet girl next door,” read one reply. Someone else said, “Halle needs to play Janet Jackson first!”
Other comments under Hollywood Unlocked’s repost ranged from, “I think Coco Jones would be better,” to “Am I crazy for saying Yung Miami could play [Brandy]?” Others suggested Brandy’s daughter, Sy'Rai, who also acts and sings.
Brandy and Halle aren’t far off career-wise, considering they both played Disney princesses. In a 2020 Billboard interview, the R&B legend offered some words of wisdom to the younger star about taking on the iconic role of Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
“She needs to keep positive people around her, and to also stay positive, and to not live her life for anyone but herself. And I mean that in a way where sometimes, in this industry, we can get caught up in what everybody thinks that we should do,” she explained. “I see so much of myself in Halle.”
On Friday (Aug. 30), Halle will be dropping her second single of 2024. “Because I Love You” will serve as a follow-up to March’s “In Your Hands.” The artist previously teamed up with her sister, Chlöe Bailey, and longtime partner DDG for “Want Me” and “If I Want You,” respectively, earlier in the year.
