Pop Smoke’s gravesite was destroyed in an apparent act of vandalism.
An eyewitness came across the defaced grave on Saturday morning (Sept. 11) at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, where the 20-year-old rapper was laid to rest last year. Photos, obtained by TMZ, show a smashed marble headstone, engraved with Pop Smoke’s real name—Bashar Barakah Jackson—while debris was strewn on the ground.
Flowers, broken stone, and what appeared to be burned and discarded joints could be seen on the floor of the mausoleum. There were also drag marks on the ground, a sign that the perpetrators got into his tomb and may have tried to drag the casket out.
It’s unclear if the casket was still inside or intact. The person who discovered the damage notified security, who was unaware of the vandalism until being told. When the eyewitness returned to the site hours later, Pop’s plaque had been replaced with a blank slab, and there was caution tape around the area.
Police responded to the cemetery around 2 p.m. Saturday after an employee discovered the vandalized crypt. The total damage is estimated at $500. Police are investigating and no arrests have been made.
“An incident of vandalism took place on our grounds early Saturday,” Green-Wood Cemetery spokesman Jeff Simmons told the New York Post. “We immediately notified the authorities and are in touch with the family. Given the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”
Pop Smoke was gunned down in a home-invasion robbery in the Hollywood Hills in February 2020. Four people, two men and two teens, were arrested and charged in the fatal shooting.
