Lil Yachty is paying tribute to XXXTentacion.
On the third anniversary of his death on Friday (June 18), Lil Boat took to Instagram to share a series of text messages between him and his late friend.
In one text, Yachty asks XXX for the lyrics to his song “Valentine.” When XXX asks if he likes the song, Yachty responds, “Fu**ing love it.”
Yachty tells XXX that he wants him to remix one of his songs before proposing a new collaboration. “I’ll do it, and we can do something new,” says XXX.
At one point, they declare their love for each other. “I love u ni**a U a good ni**a,” writes XXX, to which Yachty replies, “I love u bro its gang gang.”
Along with the texts, Yachty reflected on their genuine friendship. “On my mama we ain’t do nothing but trade love. Pure positivity. You are a god my good sir @xxxtentacion,” said Yachty, who held a candlelight vigil for his friend in Atlanta following his death.
In a 2018 interview with Rap-Up, Yachty opened up about the tragic loss while vowing to carry on XXX’s legacy.
“It’s made me want to be a better person in life,” he said. “I kinda just want to pick up where he left off. He was trying to do so many positive things for the community. He wanted to have a helping hand everywhere. I kinda want to take that legacy and really do something with it.”
XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was shot and killed outside of a motorcycle dealership in Florida on June 18, 2018. He was 20. His mother, Jahseh Onfroy, also shared a tribute video in memory of her son.
