Diddy is feeling the Love.
After teasing a potential name change, the hip-hop impresario is making it official. According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Sean Combs has legally filed a name change petition in the Los Angeles County Courts to change his middle name from John to Love.
In the documents, filed by celebrity attorney Laura Wasser, Diddy proposes the name change from “Sean John Combs” to “Sean Love Combs.” He reveals his reasoning is a “desire to change middle name.”
In November 2017, the hip-hop mogul announced that he was changing his name to Brother Love. “I know it’s risky,” he said in a social media video. “It could come off as corny to some people. I decided to change my name again. I’m just not who I am before. I’m something different. So my new name is Love aka Brother Love. I will not be answering to Puffy, Diddy, Puff Daddy, or any of my other monikers.”
But just days later, he had a change of heart. “I’ve come to the conclusion that you cannot play around with the internet,” he said. “Due to an overwhelming response from the media out there, and due there not wanting to be any confusion, I was only joking. Okay? I didn’t change my name.”
Diddy went on to explain that Love is his alter ego. “It’s just part of one of my alter egos,” he said. “One of my alter egos is Love.”
The rapper-producer-mogul has also gone by other monikers including Puff Daddy, Puffy, and P. Diddy, but this would be his first legal name change.
Once the petition is accepted, Diddy’s legal team will have to publish it in a public newspaper. As long as nobody objects to the name change, he will officially become Sean Love Combs.
