Nipsey Hussle’s brother is facing a legal battle with the Crips over his brother’s catchphrase.
According to documents obtained by The Blast, Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom filed an application on May 28 to trademark “The Marathon Continues” for various uses, including entertainment services, music, and “charitable activities and the doing of good deeds for others and the promotion of ethical and character values.”
The Crips are claiming similar intent to use “TMC” to promote charitable events in the community and focus on “gang intervention.” Nipsey was a member of the Crips during his life, but his brother wants to keep Nipsey’s famous slogan in the family.
The Marathon name has become synonymous with the Crenshaw MC. He owned the Marathon Clothing store in South Central L.A., where he lost his life in March, and released two mixtapes with the name, 2010’s The Marathon and 2011’s The Marathon Continues.
Once the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office acknowledges the dual filings, they will decide who has the right to profit off the name.
