R. Kelly is back in police custody Wednesday after a hearing over unpaid child support.
The 52-year-old singer was taken out the back of the courtroom at Chicago’s Daley Center with his hands behind his back. His hands weren’t cuffed. A spokesperson for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office tells The Associated Press that Kelly will be transferred to the Cook County Jail.
Last month, a Cook County judge issued an order that would send Kelly to jail if he didn’t pay the $161,663 he owes his ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, by 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving four women, including three who were underage at the time. He spent three nights in jail before posting $100,000 to secure his release on $1 million bail. The money was put forth by a female fan who met him on a Lake Michigan cruise last fall.
Kelly has pleaded his innocence. During an explosive interview with CBS News’ Gayle King, he called his accusers liars and said he is the victim of a smear campaign. “I didn’t do this stuff,” said Kelly. “This is not me. I’m fightin’ for my fu**in’ life.”
UPDATE: R. Kelly was released from Cook County Jail on Saturday morning (Mar. 9) after making his outstanding child support payment. The singer paid the $161,633 he owes to ex-wife Andrea Kelly with help from a “benefactor.”
