Breakup to makeup. Following a highly-publicized split in 2014, Danity Kane surprised fans when they once again reunited last month.
In their first interview since getting back together, the group’s three remaining members—Dawn Richard, Aubrey O’Day, and Shannon Bex—stopped by Rap-Up HQ to discuss their reunion and path to reconciliation.
“The way it feels being back together, for me surreal,” said Shannon. “The other word I have is completed. It feels good.”
Dawn added, “In a great way, it’s kinda put women together that have gone through different things in their lives and say, ‘We don’t always have to agree, but there is something here that is of sisterhood and there’s something here that is incomplete that needs to be finished.'”
Aubrey concurred. “We have our family back. I’ve been in a relationship with them longer than anyone I’ve loved, since I was 17.”
After a “toxic” romance led Aubrey to therapy, it forced her to reexamine her life. “I was thinking about the relationships that can and can’t be resolved, and one of them that wasn’t resolved yet that could be was Dawn,” she explained.
She and Dawn eventually met up and talked things out. “We actually met up and sat for like eight hours and talked through everything. For us, it’s gotta be sincere or we’re not doing it,” she said. “Money’s great, but we don’t need it. Fame is great, but we don’t need it. We only want it in a sincere way.”
The reunited DK3 will now hit the road on “The Universe Is Undefeated Tour,” their first tour in four years. The U.S. trek kicks off Friday (Sept. 28) in Stamford, Conn. and hits major markets including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and more throughout October and November.
You can expect sets from Dawn and Aubrey and Shannon’s duo dumblonde, as well as Danity Kane hits, and maybe even some new music. “This is the first time people have seen us do our own stuff as well as our DK stuff,” said Dawn. “You’ll get to see a real artistic approach to DK.”
Tickets, including meet and greet passes, are on sale now.
