When he’s not in the studio with Cardi B and Offset, Lil Yachty can be seen on the big screen as the voice of Green Lantern in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
While promoting his first film role, the 20-year-old rapper stopped by Rap-Up HQ to discuss the animated superhero movie, which also stars Nicolas Cage, Halsey, and Jimmy Kimmel. “It’s kinda like recording a song in the studio. You have to have expression and be dramatic,” says Yachty, who grew up watching animated shows like “Rocko’s Modern Life” and “Courage the Cowardly Dog.”
Yachty is now working on new music including a sequel to Quality Control’s Control the Streets, Vol. 1 compilation, but says his Glacier Boyz joint project with Gucci Mane and Migos has been put on the backburner.
“We had hella songs, but some of them just wasn’t up to par,” he tells Rap-Up. “[Migos] had dropped Culture II, they didn’t want to put no crap out.”
However, the Quality Control squad remains tight. “It’s very tight-knit,” he reveals. “It’s probably the tighest label out. It’s real family. We can all call each other and depend on each other, see each other if we need to. It’s not fake.”
Yachty also gushed about his idol Kanye West, whose ye listening party he attended in Wyoming. “Kanye’s a big inspiration. Kanye’s amazing. I think Kanye West is super talented. My dad’s been playing Kanye West since elementary school.”
Plus, he opened up about carrying on the legacy left by his late friend XXXTentacion. “It’s made me want to be a better person in life,” says Yachty. “I kinda just want to pick up where he left off. He was trying to do so many positive things for the community. He wanted to have a helping hand everywhere. I kinda want to take that legacy and really do something with it.”
