Janelle Monáe is just days away from releasing her new album, Dirty Computer. But before she does, she has unveiled the tracklisting through an interactive password-protected website experience.
The star-studded 14-song set features a diverse cast of artists. Brian Wilson (“Dirty Computer”), Zoë Kravitz (“Screwed”), and Pharrell Williams (“I Got the Juice”) all lend a hand.
The late Prince was also a source off inspiration. “It’s difficult for me to even speak about this because Prince was helping me with the album before he passed on to another frequency,” said Janelle. “[His death was] a stab in the stomach. The last time I saw him was New Year’s Day. I performed a private party in St. Barts with him, and after we sat and just talked for five hours. He was one of the people I would talk to about things, him and Stevie Wonder.”
Additionally, Monáe’s website reveals what each song was influenced by. Her inspirations include Black Panther, Prince, Quincy Jones, “wack ass fuckboys everywhere,” “the dismal night” of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, and President Barack Obama’s “A More Perfect Union” speech from 2008.
Yesterday, Monáe announced her “Dirty Computer Tour,” which will run from June 11 through Aug. 4. She also released the video for “I Like That,” which follows “Make Me Feel,” “Django Jane,” and “PYNK.”
Dirty Computer arrives Friday (Apr. 27).
