On the eve of her debut album Invasion of Privacy, Cardi B opens up. The Bronx bombshell sits down with Beats 1’s Ebro Darden to talk about her long-awaited LP, pregnancy rumors, and much more.
The poolside chat includes a portion concerning her rumored bundle of joy. “People just gotta tune in a little bit on my album,” she said. “They will know a little bit more. I can’t address all the rumors and everything. I have been so open to people about myself, people cannot expect me to open up about everything. Certain things have to be private. You cannot invade my damn privacy. I’m not a damn animal at the zoo, that you just could see everything. No. People will find out more. If it arrive, or if it don’t arrive, then you’re gonna know what the fuck’s going on.”
Nicki Minaj also comes up during the interview. Cardi maintains that they have no beef, despite online speculation. “It’s really internet made-up,” she says. “I feel like fans and people want to see that happen because it’s really entertaining. I ain’t even gonna front. When Nicki and Remy was beefing, everybody was tuning in like, ‘What’s next?’ But I don’t have time for that. If you ain’t fucking my man or if you not taking my money from me, you not stopping my money, I don’t give a fuck about you.”
Later, she explains how they didn’t film a scene together in “MotorSport” because of their schedules. However, that doesn’t mean there’s a real beef, she insists. “I heard she couldn’t shoot that day,” she explained. “People made a lot of theories. What is it that people expect me to do or say? I already said she’s an amazing artist, paid my respect to her, I did videos before jamming to her songs. What do people expect? Y’all want me to say something bad…I’m not falling for that.”
Elsewhere during the interview, Cardi addressed ghostwriting claims, Lauryn Hill’s approval, and her new fashion line. See additional quotes from the lengthy interview below. The full interview airs drops tonight via Beats 1.
On “Be Careful” Co-Writer Pardison Fontaine: “My boy Pardison, I heard that record. We was chillin’. I heard it and I was like, ‘Yo, I love this record.’ It was just one verse. I was like, ‘This shit is crazy.’ I told him, ‘I really want this record. We need to work on this record. I want it for me.’ He said, ‘Why not? Go ahead. Take it. Just make sure you kill it. Matter of fact, I want to be with you when you do the record.’ I wanted that record. It’s not the most important from all my songs, but when I hear the song, I be really crying. It means so much. It gets me angry, sad, and women are going to relate.”
On Whether “Be Careful” is About Offset: “I wasn’t talking about Offset. I was just talking about things I relate to, that have happened to me…I heard the record before I even was in love with Offset…At first, we liked each other but we was very protective because people put things in your ear. I had to protect my heart. But then, I gave in. Just love. Let’s love each other.”
On Lauryn Hill’s Approval: “We was really nervous about [it]…If she didn’t approve it, it’s a no-go. She approved it. She had to hear the record to approve it or not. Not only was I relieved, but I was like, I cannot believe Lauryn Hill approved this record. I don’t care about anybody else. This is Lauryn Hill. For her to approve it, it’s the biggest stamp to it. Nobody can talk shit about this record to me. The sensei approved it.”
On Her Fashion Line: “Fashion Nova gave me an opportunity to design what I like, what I want to put out. I’m gonna put out a line with them, a little somethin’ somethin’. I’m collabbin’ with them for the fall. It’s gonna be great because it’s what I like…They’ve been rocking with me from the beginning. On top of that, Fashion Nova is big. I know a lot of people can’t afford expensive-ass shit…So everything is gonna be affordable. I want people to look good and high end with a good budget price. That’s the perfect opportunity.”
