After hitting the road together on last year’s “DAMN. Tour,” Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott reunite on “Big Shot,” a standout collaboration off the just-released Black Panther soundtrack.
Produced by Matt Schaeffer, Sounwave, CuBeatz, and Cardo, the flute-filled track is an ode to Wakanda and a chance for Kenny and La Flame to boast. Lamar kicks the track off with a call-back to his “New Freezer” verse.
“Big shot, peanut butter insides,” he raps. “Outside, cocaine white, body look like Gentiles.” Later, he adds: “Big Top Dawg and I dance on ’em like Diddy / Pop off and I pop back like Fiddy.”
Following K-Dot’s Diddy and 50 Cent references, Travis goes on to namecheck UGK’s Pimp C and Iggy Azalea. “Purped up, syrup’d up, ni**a, like Pimp C,” he raps. “Flight suit, ’bout to slide down Space City / Top down, she down under like Iggy.” In his trademark echoed Auto-Tune, he adds: “It’s lit!”
Black Panther: The Album features music from and inspired by the Ryan Coogler film, which is set to arrive Feb. 16. It was curated by Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg Entertainment, and the label’s CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. K-Dot appears all over the effort, along with collaborators SZA, The Weeknd, ScHoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Future, Khalid, Swae Lee, and more.
