Still bubbling off “Black Spiderman” and “Everybody,” Logic unleashes “1-800-273-8255,” a collaboration with Alessia Cara and Khalid off his forthcoming album, Everybody.
The track title refers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and is a direct commentary on suicidal thoughts.
“I don’t want to be alive / I just want to die,” says Logic on the intro before switching roles and stressing that there’s more to live for.
“I want you to be alive,” he sings. “You don’t gotta die.” In the end, Logic goes back to his original perspective and flips the negative to positive. “I finally wanna be alive,” he adds. “I don’t wanna die.”
In between these moments, Alessia Cara and Khalid join in with inspiring vocals about gratitude for life and overcoming pain.
Logic took to Twitter to explain the song’s inspiration. “Over the years so many of you guys have told me that my music has helped you through so many tough times,” he tweeted. “Many of you have told me its even saved your life. I’m beyond humbled. But I felt I haven’t done enough. I felt compelled to make a song that could actually help you. I made this song for all of you who are in a dark place and can’t seem to find the light.”
Speaking with Genius, Logic acknowledged that it isn’t exactly autobiographical. “I’ve thought about it but never in my life did I ever think about actually committing the act for real,” he said. “And I hopefully I am never there. But I know a lot of people who have. A lot of people very near and dear and close to my heart and because of that, I think that also served for inspiration for this song.”
Featuring Killer Mike, Black Thought, Chuck D, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, Everybody is due May 5.
