Despite controversy surrounding President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, Chrisette Michele will reportedly perform at the Jan. 20 event.
According to the New York Daily News, the R&B songstress agreed to the performance a week ago, but kept it under wraps due to expected criticism.
At first, Michele was asked to perform “Intentional” with Travis Greene, Jonathan McReynolds, and Tye Tribbett. However, at least two of the three others declined.
Broadway singer Jennifer Holliday recently backed out of performing at the inauguration due to what she called a “lapse of judgement.” Later, it was revealed that she also received death threats after announcing the gig.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band cover band The B Street Band was set to perform at an inaugural party, as well. However, they backed out following the real band’s criticism.
2 Chainz has said he declined an offer to perform at the inauguration, as well. “I know they’re only doing this because they can’t get anyone else,” Chainz said. “I had to say nah. No matter how much money it was. I probably won’t be going to the White House no time soon.”
YG was not asked to perform, but he offered his services. According to the Compton rapper, he’s willing to perform “FDT (F**k Donald Trump)” at the inauguration for a $4 million fee.
Michele has already received criticism regarding her decision to perform. On Instagram, one fan wrote: “You’d be the same one to tell where the slaves was hiding for a couple of coins! Money over principles huh, you’re a fool!” Another added: “Welp guess you don’t care about ur career officially will not support any project ur are affiliated with!!”
The criticism continued with another fan saying Michele’s credibility is now in question. “Obama said you were on his playlist, never heard Donald ever mention you. I understand getting your coins, but you are playing for a crowd who doesn’t purchase your music. Can’t say that I will stop supporting you, but this gives me pause about integrity as an artist Vs being in it for the money.”
Some fans offered support, however, with one person writing: “I’m so happy your going to perform! I’m proud of you, cause at the end of the day we’re all Americans.”
So far, inauguration performers include ’90s rock band 3 Doors Down, country singer Toby Keith, and 81-year-old singer Sam Moore of Sam and Dave.
