Rich Homie Quan is responding to backlash.

On Monday (Jul. 12), the Atlanta rapper performed Notorious B.I.G.’s verse off Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s “Get Money” with Lil’ Kim at VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors.” However, he had some trouble getting through the verse, missing most of the lines from the heralded classic.

After the flub, he received backlash from hip-hop fans and was the focus of several memes.

In response to the criticism, Quan took to Instagram to issue a sincere apology. “I assure you that I never intended to disrespect Biggie Smalls,” he wrote. “I have long respected his work and his contribution to the rap game. I greatly apologize not only to Biggie Smalls, but also to all of my fans and to New York.

“The city of New York has been nothing but good to me,” he added. “I felt honored to stand on stage with artists I grew up listening to. Once on stage I had some technical difficulties and must admit I got nervous. I will forever be sorry to New York, my fans, Biggie Small, Lil Kim, and all the Hip Hop community for my performance. I hope you can accept my apology. To Lil Kim, Thank you for the opportunity.”

Quan’s downturn took place when he rapped about how he would “play Nintendo with Cease and Alamo” as opposed to “Cease and Nino.” Biggie’s widow, Faith Evans, told TMZ that she understood the backlash, particularly because of that error. “Faith says if RHQ had a clue about Junior M.A.F.I.A. members Lil’ Cease and Nino Brown, he wouldn’t have screwed up that lyric,” the site writes, though they don’t provide direct quotes. “Still, Biggie’s ex-wife thinks people should let Quan off the hook because everyone makes mistakes.”

Lil’ Kim concurred. She reshared Quan’s message with a statement of her own. “Spoken like a true giant,” she wrote. “I loved you before and I’m gonna love you after Rich Homie. People make mistakes and things happen sometimes that we can’t fix or undo. If you guys only knew the technical difficulties that went on behind the scenes. I would like to thank my friend @richhomiequan for coming through for me at the last minute. It’s all love ❤️.”

Lil’ Cease also addressed the stumble. On Instagram, he shared a couple of memes about it with some statements on the matter. “Sh*t Hurt,” he wrote as a caption in one image. “But I Gotta Laugh It Off Gotta Do Better For The Great!!” In another one, though, he clarified his stance. “Im Not Mad The At Rich Homie Tho,” he explained. “That Just Wasn’t His Setting!! That’s Still Da Homie #ItsAllGood.”

Meanwhile, Nino Brown also commented on the matter via Instagram. “That ni**a said play Nintendo with Cease and Alimo then stop cause that’s all the lyrics he new,” he wrote. “#wegonnado #abiggiechallenge #dumrappersneedteaching #lessonA.”
