After running the airwaves with “Classic Man,” Jidenna returns to remind fans that the “Chief Don’t Run.”
Over potent drums, the Nigerian-American MC raps about his upbringing and early life struggles. “Me and mom in the shack in the woods, bro,” he rhymes. “I was sleepin’ on the floor with the oven door open / While I dreamt about the places that I would go.”
Jidenna, who kicked off Sunday’s BET Awards pre-show, also takes a moment to establish his crown on the track. “Look what we did with one song out here,” he raps. “Like a locksmith opened every door out here / Ya dealing with a king, not a kong out here / You a pawn, but we can get along out here.”
“Chief Don’t Run” is a single off Jidenna’s upcoming Wondaland/Epic Records debut Long Live the Chief, which he previewed last week in L.A. “You can expect swank,” he told Rap-Up. “You can expect an album that feels like the adventures of classic man. What does a classic man do when he’s in his hotel? What does he do when he explores South Central L.A. all the way to Dubai? You can expect the best album in 2016, hands down, feet down.”
