Kendrick Lamar is at the top of his game, but his success didn’t come overnight. The Compton rapper acknowledges his hustle and grind in a video called “Hard Work.” In the inspirational clip, K-Dot plays mentor to a young boy, who he meets on the basketball court. It’s not long before the kid discovers that Kendrick is famous, but K-Dot shrugs it off: “He just recognize hard work.”

A couple female fans ask him for selfies (“You get all the girls,” says the boy), and again he tells him that it’s hard work that got him to where he is. He goes to the diner and a man offers to pay for his food, and once again, Kendrick tells his protégé that it’s hard work that put him in that position.

The video ends by acknowledging Kendrick’s staggering 11 Grammy nominations, which makes him the second most nominated artist in a year, only trailing Michael Jackson with 12.
