After years of getting snubbed, N.W.A has finally been selected to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
The iconic rap group—Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella—has been nominated three previous times. With their inclusion in next year’s class, they become the fifth hip-hop act to receive the honor, joining Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and Public Enemy. Fellow inductees this year include Cheap Trick, Chicago, Steve Miller, and Deep Purple.
Ice Cube already spoke on the honor. “It’s hard to sum up exactly what it means,” he told Rolling Stone. “It means a lot of things. It means that the group’s mark is kind of solidified. It’s all legitimized in a way because the whole music industry has to honor the group in a way. It’s just hard to sum up in words, really.”
MC Ren did the same, tweeting, “It feels good to finally make it in the #RockNRollhalloffame. All praise is due to God. Wanna thank my group and the fans. Thanx.”
The announcement comes on the heels of a wildly successful year for the veteran hip-hop collective. Their biopic, Straight Outta Compton, was a blockbuster smash, earning the fourth biggest August opening of all-time and, within a month, becoming the highest-grossing music biopic ever. In addition to their Hall of Fame induction, the film has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
