Tiara Thomas goes Up in Smoke on her brand new EP, which contains nine songs and several tons of personality, bubbling up from Thomas’ gifted pipes. The Indianapolis native raps and sings over rolling, blunted production from Ryan “Ryghteous” Tedder, Swagg R’celious, and Warren “Oak” Felder, filled with chunky percussion and atmospheric R&B instrumentation.
Originally signed to Division1/Interscope following 2013’s hit with Wale, “Bad,” Thomas references her new status as an independent artist on the opener “My Ways.” She characterizes the decision to go indie as an effort to maintain creative control, while dealing with heartbreak on “Nikki,” which she describes as a “broken bitch story.”
“It’s my first project that I feel is totally me in my life right now,” said Tiara, who can be seen on the new season of MTV’s “Girl Code.”
