Vic Mensa is the newest member of the Roc. The Chicago rapper has inked a deal with Roc Nation Records.
He made it official on Tuesday. In the announcement video, which premiered on TIDAL, the 21-year-old Savemoney co-founder meets with Jay Z and signs his deal.
He joins a prestigious list of artists on Roc Nation including Jay Z, Kanye West, and Rihanna. “It feels astounding just to be in a family tree like that, from Jay Z to Kanye West to J. Cole,” said Vic. “I look up to all of them dudes. It gives me chills almost. Everything that I’ve done for so long is what’s [brought] me to this point. And this is only the beginning.”
Jay Z celebrated his signing with shots. “Welcome. Let’s kill shit,” he told him.
Mensa has been building his buzz with his 2010 debut mixtape Straight Up and 2013’s INNANETAPE, which helped earn him a spot on XXL‘s 2014 Freshman Class.
His new single “U Mad” features his Roc Nation labelmate Kanye West. He made his Coachella debut this month and can also be heard on Kanye’s “Wolves,” which they performed on “SNL” in February.
To celebrate the announcement, he got a Roc-A-Fella Records logo tatted on his neck. “Savemoney Roc Boys,” he tweeted.
