Is it the end for Childish Gambino?
While promoting his new film The Lazarus Effect on “Today,” Donald Glover revealed that he may be retiring his rap alter ego Childish Gambino.
“I guess Childish Gambino is a period in my art time. I want to have periods in my life,” said the 31-year-old rapper-actor. “I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.”
He added, “I look at my life as something you should be able to paint. I think it is kinda like performance art.”
Glover has released three projects under his Childish Gambino pseudonym including his most recent, 2014’s STN MTN/Kauai.
Despite hinting at retirement, Gambino is scheduled to play festivals this year including Bonnaroo in June and London’s Wireless Festival in July.
For now, he is focused on his acting career and is gunning for the role of Spider-Man in the next installment of the comic book franchise. “There’s been talkings about it,” he said. “I’d be honored to play it, but it’s really not up to me. I just want Spider-Man to be good.”
