The Black Era begins. In the wake of Danity Kane’s breakup and final album DK3, Dawn Richard is spreading her wings and flying solo once again. The singer has announced plans to release Blackheart on January 15.
The album, the second in her Heart trilogy, arrives two years after her 2012 solo debut Goldenheart.
“With the help of my long time creative/business partner, Kyle Cabrol, I was able to create something we are proud of,” said Dawn. “This project is very special to me. We set out to redefine the term ‘independent’ and really push the limits on what could be done. We are just two people but we act as a label that has an entire staff. Both of us are extremely excited to share this art with the hearts.”
Dawn has been writing and producing alongside Noisecastle III, and has crafted a sound inspired by trip-hop, electro-pop, and soul. “This album is the most experimental album of my career as well as my biggest risk taker,” she said.
She showcases her new look and sound in the dance-heavy video for “Blow.” “‘Blow’ speaks about the ferocity of the heart movement,” explained Dawn. “In a time where numbers and stats matter, we simply don’t give a f**k if you like us. We are here. We are strong and we are beautifully imperfect. This visual and record was a perfect way to say…The hearts are still here.”
