Jeremih’s single “Down on Me” is rocketing up the charts thanks to a viral video starring YouTube sensation Keenan Cahill and 50 Cent. The clip has already been viewed over 4.5 million times since its debut five days ago. Jeremih spoke to staging-rapup.kinsta.cloud about the song’s resurgence, his thoughts on Keenan’s cover, and shooting the official video this week.
The video was the brainchild of 50 Cent and his rumored girlfriend, comedienne Chelsea Handler. “50 Cent [and Chelsea], who knows what their relationship is, but they did work that out,” said Jeremih. “I gotta give big ups to the whole G-Unit camp for making that happen and taking that song to the top.”
The R&B crooner was somewhat familiar with 15-year-old Keenan. “I actually saw one of his videos like a month ago, something he did on Katy Perry. I thought it was hilarious. When I first saw him do ‘Down on Me,’ I was just looking at the other songs he had done and I was in awe, but I was laughing the whole time. It was just an uncontrollable laugh.”
“Down on Me,” the second single from Jeremih’s sophomore album All About You, is currently No. 4 on the iTunes R&B chart as a result of Keenan’s video. “It went overnight from No. 25 to No. 11,” shared Jeremih.
He hasn’t met the Internet star yet, but they already have one thing in common. “I look forward to [meeting him]. I hear he’s from Chicago, which is my hometown.”
The official music video, inspired by the YouTube clip, will be shot this week in Los Angeles with director Colin Tilley and may feature a cameo from Keenan himself. “I haven’t met him yet, but we look forward to putting him in the official video for the song.”
Instead of filming in Keenan’s bedroom, the G-Unit rapper may provide the location. “50 Cent’s got a lot of cribs so I know we’re supposed to shoot in one of them.”
