Jay-Z has always been reserved when it comes to his personal life. Rarely does the Brooklyn-born rapper openly disclose life as a married man or reveal details about the friends he keeps in his tight-knit circle. Yet when Hov spills some details about either, the public anxiously awaits on what he’s prepared to discuss. This time, Jay shared a few words about his friendship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
Time and again the paparazzi have caught Jay-Z hanging out with Martin and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow, namely at a recent outing in the Hamptons. However, the rapper admits that during a different time in his life, he would not have been so keen on the idea of getting to know the British band man.
For example, if a 16-year-old Jay-Z spotted Chris Martin walking through the streets of the Brooklyn housing project he grew up in, polite handshakes would be the last thing exchanged.
“That’s a different scenario,” Jay-Z told Q magazine. “He couldn’t walk through Marcy. I was a different person then. I wasn’t open to the world and to cultures.”
The rapper, who recently jumped on the remix to Kanye West’s “POWER,” admitted he would have emptied the Coldplay singer’s pockets.
“I would have been, ‘Yo! Who are you? Give me your money,'” Jay-Z said. “You couldn’t have a guy like Chris walking through Marcy. He’d have to get robbed. At best.”
