M.I.A. has a lot on her plate these days, including raising a son, running a record label, and releasing her third album.
The 34-year-old singer hinted at a June release for her next album, the follow-up to 2007’s Kala. “I THINK IM READY,” she tweeted. “JUNE 2010.”
Just last month, she told Rolling Stone that she is putting finishing touches on the project, recording mostly with Baltimore producer Blaqstarr. “[He] simply makes music that sounds good, and I needed that,” she told the magazine. “I definitely needed to come to music on this album, to make music. I don’t want it to be gimmicky or silly or hipstery.”
Fans got a taste of what’s to come with the leaked track “Space Odyssey.” Other songs expected to make the cut include “I Fight the Ones That Fight Me” and “I’m Down Like Your Internet Connection,” which features Filipino Verizon workers singing on the hook.
Meanwhile, the “Paper Planes” hitmaker won’t be getting on any planes anytime soon. “BANNED FROM LEAVING THE U.S, FAMILY BANNED FROM COMING TO U.S TO SEE ME,” she wrote. Her travel restrictions have kept her in one place while recording and also influenced her “honest” sound.
