Cardi B is in album mode.
After making her acting debut in Hustlers and serving as a judge on Netflix’s “Rhythm + Flow,” the Grammy-winning rapper is back in the studio readying her sophomore album. In an interview with Billboard, she opened up about the follow-up to her 2018 debut Invasion of Privacy.
“My album is on my mind 24/7,” said Cardi. “It’s practically all I’m focusing on.”
She debated whether to capitalize on the popular twerk sound that’s been dominating music, but decided not to follow the trend. “There’s certain music that I want to do, but I feel like, is people interested in that? I feel like things have changed,” she said. “It’s more like a twerk sound going on right now. It’s just like, ‘Should I just do my music around that?’ But I cannot just go with what’s hot. I still gotta go with what I want to do. I just got out of that follow what’s hot and follow what you want to do.”
It’s the same way she approached Invasion of Privacy, which topped the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy for Best Rap Album. “I was going with what I want people to hear, and what I like, so that’s what I’m doing now,” added Cardi. “I’m just having fun in the studio, because if you think, ‘My first album was like this, I gotta have the same recipe,” it’s just not gonna work.'”
She previously announced that the album would be called Tiger Woods, but it’s unclear if that will actually be the title. “I think I’ma name my album Tiger Woods ’cause remember when everybody was talking shit on Tiger Woods and then he fucking came and won that green jacket? That’s what I’ma name my album,” she told fans during an Instagram Live session last month.
