After announcing her return with “Joanna,” JoJo keeps the momentum going with her soulful new single “Sabotage” featuring CHIKA.
On the hip-hop-infused track, JoJo gets real about relationships. “Every time I think about me and you, I wonder did I play myself…and sabotage love?” she asks.
“A lot of people self-sabotage… I tend to do it in romantic relationships,” explained JoJo. “And I think most of it roots to fear – fear of being inadequate, fear of getting hurt, fear of rejection, fear of not measuring up… This song is about asking a lot of questions, dealing with shame and embarrassment, and really just owning up to certain patterns.”
Together with producers Doc McKinney (The Weeknd, Santigold) and Lido (Halsey, Chance the Rapper), JoJo is now readying her new album, the follow-up to 2016’s Mad Love, for a 2020 release. It marks her first project since signing with Warner Records through a joint venture with her own Clover Music.
One year ago, she rented an Airbnb and started recording the album with some of her “favorite creative friends.” “This was one of the best times I’ve ever had,” she said. “I felt so supported and safe. Safe enough to get really brutally honest and address things I’ve seen and heard about myself for years and sometimes believed.”
