After much anticipation, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V arrived Thursday night, but it was missing two big names that were rumored to be on the project—Drake and Post Malone.
Now, Rolling Stone reports that “What About Me” was supposed to feature Drake, according to Johnny Yukon, who co-wrote the song in 2015. Post Malone also reportedly recorded a featured verse earlier this week, but it didn’t make the final version, which instead features rapper Sosamann.
“The initial idea was to get Drake on it,” Yukon tells Rolling Stone. “That was something [Lil Wayne] said to me that night [he recorded his vocals]… Then there were emails back and forth—’They think Drake’s going to get on it.'”
Earlier this week, TMZ reported that Post Malone rushed to the studio to add a last-minute verse to Tha Carter V. “There is a version [of ‘What About Me’] that Post cut literally this week,” reveals Yukon.
The Auto-Tuned R&B record finds Weezy emoting about heartbreak. “I stayed up all night for you / Girl, what about me?” he sings. “I shut down my life for you / Now you run around with him.”
While Drake and Malone didn’t make C5, the 23-track album does feature appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Ashanti, Snoop Dogg, and more.
