The stars are aligning for the 2018 Global Citizen Festival.
The Weeknd and Janet Jackson will headline the seventh annual festival in New York City’s Central Park on Saturday, Sept. 29. The star-studded lineup also includes Cardi B, Janelle Monáe, and Shawn Mendes.
“It is invaluable to be in a position where I can use my voice to help the millions of people in need,” said The Weeknd in a statement. “I am honored to align myself with Global Citizen in the fight to end world poverty.”
John Legend will perform a special guest set, while Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness will co-host the event for 60,000 Global Citizens on Central Park’s Great Lawn and millions across the world.
Global Citizen is a free-ticketed event. Instead of charging for tickets, the festival asks fans to earn tickets through advocacy and social justice work. The performances will be livestreamed on YouTube and Twitter.
In addition to the New York fest, Global Citizen will host a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa on Dec. 2 as part of its “Mandela 100” campaign, honoring 100 years since Nelson Mandela’s birth. The lineup includes Beyoncé and JAY-Z, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams, Usher, Chris Martin, and Wizkid.
