XXXTentacion Breaks Taylor Swift's Single-Day Spotify Streaming Record

  /  06.20.2018

Following his tragic death, XXXTentacion has set a new Spotify record.

The late rapper’s song “SAD!” broke Spotify’s single-day streaming record that had previously been held by Taylor Swift, according to Billboard.

“SAD!” was streamed 10.4 million times on Spotify the day after XXXTentacion’s death on June 19. By comparison, Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” amassed 10.1 million streams on its release day, August 25, 2017.

Since Swift’s song was released, Spotify has added 15 million paying subscribers. Spotify now has 75 million subscribers compared to 60 million at the end of July 2017.

Prior to his death, Spotify had removed “SAD!” from its playlists including Rap Caviar as part of a new “hateful conduct” policy. But the streaming giant restored the track after facing backlash. The day of his death, “SAD!” was placed at the top of its Rap Caviar playlist, along with a tribute to the rapper.

XXXTentacion’s music sales have increased by 1,603 percent in the U.S. after his death, according to Nielsen Music. Industry forecasters expect his latest album ? to return to the top 10 on next week’s Billboard 200 with more than 45,000 equivalent album units. It debuted at No. 1 in March with 131,000 units.
