XXXTentacion is dead after a shooting near Miami on Monday (June 18). He was 20 years old.
The rapper, born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was shopping for motorcycles on the 3600 block of N. Dixie Hwy. in Deerfield Beach, South Florida, when a gunman reportedly opened fire on his vehicle as he was leaving. Witnesses say they heard multiple shots fired. Video shared on social media showed XXXTentacion’s body in the driver’s seat of a BMW i8 as police arrived on the scene.
He was rushed to Broward Health North hospital as a trauma patient before the Broward Co. Sheriff’s Dept. pronounced him dead.
According to dispatch audio, the suspects were described as two black males wearing hoodies, and the shooter was wearing a red mask. They fled the scene in a black Dodge Journey, with tinted windows and black wheels.
XXX shot to stardom with his 2017 breakout hit “Look at Me!” and his two studio albums, 2017’s 17 and this year’s ?, which topped the charts upon its release in March.
His personal life had also been the source of controversy. XXX had been awaiting trial on charges of domestic battery, false imprisonment, and aggravated battery of his pregnant girlfriend, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Spotify recently banned his songs from their playlists as part of a “hate content and hateful conduct” policy. After an outcry from key music industry figures including Kendrick Lamar, the streaming service decided to partially change its policy to punish artists for their personal misconduct.
His peers, including Kanye West, J. Cole, Tyga, and 2 Chainz, took to Twitter to send their condolences.
