Childish Gambino may have said that he was thinking about retiring, but the singer-rapper-actor just signed a new deal with RCA Records.
Donald Glover called the partnership with his Wolf + Rothstein imprint a “necessary change of pace” and RCA’s Chairman/CEO Peter Edge also shared his excitement.
“Donald is undoubtedly one of the most talented, multi-faceted, young entertainers of this era,” he told Variety. “We are excited to join forces with him and Wolf + Rothstein to usher in the next phase of Childish Gambino’s musical career.”
Fam Rothstein, who runs Wolf + Rothstein with Glover and Wolf Taylor, said it was the right time for this deal. “Being malleable is important to us, and that’s what this partnership allows,” he explained. “Also, it was about that time.”
In June, the “Redbone” star said he was planning to retire as a musician after “one last Gambino album.” “There’s nothing worse than like a third sequel,” he added. “Like a third movie and we’re like, ‘Again?’ You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back, there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”
Childish will perform at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 28, where his work on Awaken, My Love! earned him five nominations including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Urban Contemporary Album.
