Ty Dolla $ign and Future explore the “Darkside” on a single off the just-announced Bright soundtrack.
With Kiiara handling the haunting chorus, Ty focuses on overcoming oppression and adversity. “I am not afraid / Sick of the oppression and all the hate,” he sings. “Had to change my life for the better days / Had to boss up and overcome adversity.”
Following the infectiously brooding hook, Hendrix takes on haters with a reference to Kanye West and JAY-Z. “Watch for the throne like Yeezus,” he sing-raps. “They trying to clone me / Thinking I don’t see ’em / They take subliminal shots, thinking we don’t hear ’em.”
“Darkside” is the first offering from Bright: The Album, which is set to feature appearances by A$AP Rocky, Lil Uzi Vert, Logic, Meek Mill, Migos, Snoop Dogg, and Camila Cabello, among others.
The collaboration marks an important moment for Ty Dolla, who just released Beach House 3. “We did the Ninja Turles movie and we did Suicide Squad [with Atlantic’s Kevin Weaver],” he told Beats 1. “He called me back to do this Bright. I got a song on a movie with Will Smith? This is the second time. Let’s get it.”
Bright hits Netflix on Dec. 22, and the soundtrack arrives Dec. 13.
