Congratulations to Post Malone. The Dallas rapper went from feeling like a “rockstar” to being a chart-topping all-star as his 21 Savage-assisted single has just dethroned Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” on the Billboard Hot 100.
It is the first No. 1 for both Posty and the Slaughter Gang MC. Malone had previously peaked at No. 8 with “Congratulations” featuring Quavo, while Savage soared as high as No. 12 with “Bank Account.”
This is also a major win for hip-hop, as it marks the fifth rap song to reign on the Hot 100 this year, tying for most rap songs to peak at No. 1 in a year. “rockstar” follows “Bodak,” “DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One,” Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.,” and Migos’ “Bad and Boujee.” Each song was also the artist’s first Hot 100-topper.
The last time this many rap songs reigned was 2006, thanks to D4L’s “Laffy Taffy,” Nelly’s “Grillz,” Sean Paul’s “Temperature,” Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’,” and Ludacris’ “Money Maker.” The same number of rap songs appeared atop the Hot 100 in 2003 and 2004, as well.
Elsewhere on the chart, “Bodak” drops to No. 2, Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” (featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid) appears at No. 3, J Balvin, Willy William’s Beyoncé-assisted “Mi Gente” dips 3-6, Sam Smith’s “Too Good at Goodbyes” jumps 13-7, and French Montana’s “Unforgettable” (with Swae Lee) holds steady at No. 10.
