Remy Ma Wins Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at BET Awards

Remy Ma wears the crown.

The Bronx rapper dethroned her rival Nicki Minaj on Sunday (June 25), when she took home the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist trophy at the BET Awards, an honor that Minaj has won for the past seven straight years.

Starting her speech on a positive note, Reminisce — who also won the award in 2005 — explained what it meant to have a second chance at success after spending nearly seven years behind bars.

“I want to thank God, first and foremost,” she said. “I’ve been through a lot. To everybody who thinks there’s no such thing as second chances, I’m here to tell you, that’s a lie. You just gotta keep working hard. Shoutout to everybody in Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, Albion Correctional Facility, anybody on parole, it’s hard but you can do it. You can make mistakes and come back.”

Then, after thanking her husband Papoose and her partner-in-rhyme Fat Joe (with whom she released Plata o Plomo this year), Remy fired off some not-so-subtle shots from Plata o Plomo’s “Spaghetti.”

“Y’all bitches got fat while we starved,” she rapped. “Shots in your ass, pads in your bras / Y’all some liars, it ain’t no facts in your songs / And yeah, that crown is coming back to the Bronx.”

Before leaving the stage, Remy made sure to shout out the legendary Queen Latifah, as well as her fellow Best Female Hip-Hop Artist nominees, Cardi B, and Young M.A. Latifah, Cardi, and M.A. all performed with Remy at Hot 97’s Summer Jam earlier this month.

Missy Elliott and Nicki Minaj — both repeat winners of this trophy — were the remaining MCs with nods for this year’s recognition.

As Remy’s speech ended, Papoose was shown shaking hands with James Cruz, who once managed Minaj. Nicki cut ties with Cruz in 2011.

Nicki has yet to publicly speak on the award, however, she did fire off a lengthy caption about being “the most awarded female rapper” last night.

Remy is currently working on her sophomore album, Seven Winters & Six Summers, her first since 2006’s There’s Something About Remy: Based on a True Story.
