The Kardashian-West family is growing. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have reportedly decided to have another baby with the help of a surrogate, according to E! News.
Kim and Kanye have a 4-year-old daughter, North, and a 1-year-old son, Saint. However, the journey has not been easy on Kardashian.
The fashion and reality television mogul suffered from preeclampsia during her first pregnancy, which caused her face and body to swell. Usually, the condition also is characterized by “high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy,” according to Preeclampsia.org. As a result of this condition, she had to deliver North six weeks early.
Then, Kardashian suffered from placenta accreta, a “clinical condition when part of the placenta, or the entire placenta, invades and is inseparable from the uterine wall,” according to The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. It is a “potentially life-threatening obstetric condition,” which is why the family reportedly used an agency to hire a surrogate.
Kim has blogged about this condition on her website. “My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails,” she wrote. “How disgusting and painful!!! My mom was crying; she had never seen anything like this before. My delivery was fairly easy, but then going through that–it was the most painful experience of my life! They gave me a second epidural but we were racing against time, so I just had to deal.”
In November of 2016, Kim spoke about having another child on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” However, two separate doctors told her that she was likely to experience a “high-risk pregnancy” due to challenges she faced with her last two.
“Every medical issue that you could probably have, I feel like I get, and I worry so much about it,” she once told E! News. “I just don’t think pregnancy and me really agree with each other.”
In April, Kim opened up to the possibilities of surrogacy on the show. “After talking to Kanye, I think I always knew that surrogacy was an option, but I didn’t think it was that realistic of an option, and now I feel like that’s my reality. I feel like surrogacy really is the only other option for me,” she said. “Whatever’s meant to be will be.”
Shortly after news of the surrogacy became public, TMZ published financial figures related to the deal. According to the report, Kim and Kanye have agreed to pay the surrogate $45,000 in 10 separate $4,500 installments along with $5,000 for each additional child in the case of multiples. The surrogate is also set to receive $4,000 if she loses any reproductive organs. Plus, Kim and Kanye had to leave a $68,850 deposit with the agency.
The report claims that the surrogate has also agreed to certain restrictions. Among those, she must not drink, smoke, do drugs, handle cat litter, apply hair dye, eat raw fish, or drink more than one caffeinated beverage per day. She must also avoid sexual intercourse in the weeks leading up to the pregnancy and for three weeks after the embryo implantation.
Kim and Kanye have also agreed to “assume the legal and parental responsibilities” for any child who possesses any “congenital or other abnormalities or defects.”
