Hot off the success of his chart-topping album I Decided., Big Sean teamed up with some second graders and a few of hip-hop’s biggest names—Ice Cube, Migos, Ty Dolla $ign, and Lin-Manuel Miranda—on a brand new collaboration to promote education.
Organized by Ellen DeGeneres, the star-studded “Read It” is a remix of the original, which was crafted by Michael Bonner, a North Carolina teacher, and his second grade students.
Popping up in a classroom and on a scooter, Sean Don raps alongside the young MCs. “Reading helps us learn information for school,” he says. “So we can answer questions and we can be cool.”
Throughout the clip, Migos, Cube, Ty, and Miranda add their flavor to the track, which is a take on O.T. Genasis’ “Push It.”
Last month, Ellen surprised Mr. Bonner’s school with televisions, drones, iPad minis, Beats by Dre headphones, and $25,000. She also launched a GoFundMe page for the school, which has already amassed more than $80,000.
“Teachers should get more attention than I get,” said Ellen. “I’m glad I have a platform to show off people like [Mr. Bonner].”
