Pharrell is out to empower with “Runnin’,” a new single off the forthcoming Hidden Figures soundtrack.
The uplifting song’s inspiring message about women’s rights fits perfectly with the film’s theme.
“From runnin’ to exams to jobs for a man,” sings P. “Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t / In the law of the land, the women were often banned / Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t.”
Additionally, he teams with Lalah Hathaway on the soulful “Surrender.” The Neptunes hitmaker takes a backseat to Lalah, providing the clapping beat and background vocals.
Hidden Figures — which stars Janelle Monáe, Taraji P. Henson, and Octavia Spencer — is about a group of intelligent black women who “provided NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions,” as per IMDB.
Skateboard P, one of the film’s producers, was inspired by the real life experiences. “It’s such an important story,” he said. “But the idea that it was actually true…It’s a story about these women in the early 1960s who changed NASA.”
Hidden Figures is due in theaters Dec. 25.
