ScHoolboy Q Talks Quitting Music, Black Hippy Album, & Personal Struggles
ScHoolboy Q is having a huge week.
He just unleashed his Blank Face LP, he’s performing shows as part of his “Groovy Tony Pit Stops,” and he premiered the album’s movie at a theater in Los Angeles. But despite all of this, it’s also a tough week for Q.
Recently, he sat down with Real 92.3 to speak about how current events are impacting him negatively. “It’s a lot of stuff going on,” he said. “It ain’t just about me and my music. It’s tough times right now.”
During the conversation with host Letty Martinez, he also shared his personal battles on a “tragic day.” “I’m going through some things in my personal life,” he explained. “A lot of things crashed into me the day my album dropped. It’s hard for me to enjoy this moment. This is probably one of the worst days of my life. It happens to be the day that my album came out. It’s a little hard for me right now.”
A candid conversation with Q ensues in the clip. In it, he speaks about his upbringing, Black Hippy’s “THat Part” remix, Kanye West, Miguel, Justine Skye, and his Blank Face LP.

On wanting to quit music: “I took a break from music. I quit. I didn’t even tell people I retired or tell Top or Interscope. I was like, ‘I’m never giving them my album. They’ll get the point.’ Then I woke up one day and I just put the studio in the crib and was like, ‘I’d rather just do it that way.'”
On writing Blank Face LP: “I was in a growing up stage. I’ll be 30 in October. I know I look 45. It’s OK. When you hit that age, it’s almost like you done seen things twice. Things done went your way, then it didn’t go your way. Your kid is seven now. I still remember when she was nine months. Life is changing. I’m not really a gangbanger no more. I wanted to touch on that.”
On TDE CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith: “He gave me a chance. It’s hard for me to tell him no to anything. He gave me a chance that nobody else would have gave me. I wasn’t even really rapping and he let me live and sleep on his couch. He let me walk in on his refrigerator, take food out his kids’ mouth. I watched his kids grow up. It’s deeper than rap music. It’s almost like my pops.”
On Black Hippy: “We don’t like rapping with each other no more. That’s pretty old now for us. We love each other…Don’t get it wrong. We don’t like rapping with each other, but Kendrick, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, them are my favorite rappers. They taught me how to rap…I got inspired by them. They made me pick my pen up.”
On Black Hippy LP: “It’s hard. I start a tour in the next few months. Kendrick’s been working. Ab-Soul just finished a project then he’s gonna tour. Jay Rock, he’s been touring…He also has a daughter. I have a daughter. When do you have time to actually get in the studio and work on it?”
