Drake speaks. In addition to dropping Views on Apple Music last night, the Toronto rapper spoke with Zane Lowe about a series of hot topics, including his relationship with Nicki Minaj.
“I don’t really talk to Nicki,” he revealed during the interview. “[She’s] another person that I have a lot of love for, man, a lot of love and a lot of respect, not only for our past and the time and work we put in, but even the way she dealt with the situation at hand.”
The situation he’s referring to is Nicki’s romantic relationship with his rival Meek Mill. Nicki stood by her man’s side through their feud, a decision Drake respects. “I understand what love is and I understand the personal situation,” he said. “She dealt with me how I would expect her to, which is with class. I could only ever do the same…I always have respect and love for Nicki.”
When asked about the Drake vs. Meek feud last year, Nicki called it “ridiculous,” adding, “I just want it to be over.”
The convo then turned to Cash Money, a label that’s been plagued by internal conflict due to Lil Wayne and Birdman’s ongoing dispute. “It is a situation that I pray gets resolved,” Drake said of his bosses’ quarrel. “It’s people’s lives and it’s a legacy. I saw Kobe go out and score 60 points. I want to see them go out and score 60 points.”
Nicki isn’t the only relationship that’s soured. Another person Drake no longer speaks to is his fellow Canadian The Weeknd. After being allies, the two have seemingly been at odds for years. However, Drizzy says he has no ill will towards his former collaborator.
“That’s my guy,” he said. “We’re from the same city. We grew up with the same goal, trying to do this, and a lot of the time, we spent trying to do it together. There’s memories I’ll never forget…We put in real work together so I’m proud of his success. We’ve both had our moments where we’ve felt a way and taken it maybe a little left, but I can sit here in front of you and say that I have nothing but love for everybody over there. I loved watching him last year. It made me super happy…What a year. Well deserved.”
