It’s not Detox, but Dr. Dre—perhaps rap’s greatest tease—is on the verge of releasing a new album, according to Ice Cube.
In an interview with Philadelphia radio station Power 99 (via Billboard), Cube details plans for the soundtrack to the forthcoming N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. Alongside the film’s director F. Gary Gray, he revealed that the companion project would be comprised of new music from Dre.
“Dre is dropping an album inspired by the Compton movie. He’s dropping something on August 1,” said Cube.
Dr. Dre has been teasing a new album for over a decade. “It’s mega, it’s Dr. Dre, it’s what everybody’s been waiting for,” added Cube. “It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day.”
Dre will also host his “Pharmacy” radio show on Beats 1 on Aug. 1, and it’s likely that he will premiere new music there.
During Cube’s interview, the talk turned to an N.W.A. reunion tour. “It’s definitely, definitely possible,” noted the hip-hop legend when asked if something is in the works.
It was previously reported that a European tour was being organized, with Eminem filling in as an N.W.A honorary member.
Straight Outta Compton hits theaters Aug. 14.
UPDATE: Rolling Stone reports that Dre’s album will serve as the soundtrack to Straight Outta Compton. It will consist of new music produced entirely by the legendary rapper. Despite the Aug. 1 release date announced by Cube, RS says the album will not drop on Saturday after all. Dre is expected to confirm the details on his Beats 1 radio show “The Pharmacy” this Saturday.
