TLC is calling on their fans to fund their fifth and final album. Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign on Monday (Jan. 19) with the goal of raising $150,000 in the next 30 days.
With encouragement from their fans, the remaining two members decided that this would be their last project. “It was our decision. We wanted to add to our catalogue,” Chilli told TIME. “We’ve been so blessed to have a great catalogue, and songs that people love and want to hear. And with all of the requests from our fans wanting new stuff, it was like: ‘Okay, let’s do this one more time.'”
In exchange for donations, they will provide fans with incentives including a TLC digital scrapbook, autographed lyrics, slumber party, photo shoot, and listening party.
The new album is due at the end of 2015, and will just consist of T-Boz and Chilli. “Of course, Lisa’s spirit will always be present in our music. That will never change,” said the duo.
They plan to start from scratch, but may consider keeping the song they did with Lady Gaga and Dallas Austin called “Posh Life.” “It turned out really good,” said Chilli. “We definitely won’t throw it away.”
And they don’t plan to abandon the sound that made them one of the top-selling girl groups in history. “Our final album will stay true to the TLC sound, always confronting the real issues and life experiences that we all must face every single day, everywhere,” they said. “We write music that people relate to…timeless music. No matter the trends, we feel like our music is always relevant.”
In 2013, the group celebrated its 20th anniversary with the VH1 movie CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story and compilation album 20.
