Katy Perry, Kanye West, and Adele

Katy Perry leads the way at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The pop princess scores nine nominations, followed by Kanye West and Adele who each earn seven, MTV announced today.

Perry’s nods include Video of the Year and Best Female Video for “Firework,” Best Pop Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” and Best Special Effects for her futuristic chart-topping hit “E.T.” featuring Kanye West.

West picked up seven for his collaboration with Perry, as well as for “All of the Lights” and “POWER.”

Adele’s year keeps getting better. The vocal powerhouse, who has the current best-selling album of 2011, garners seven nominations for her soulful smash “Rolling in the Deep.”

Bruno Mars is up for four coveted Moonmen, while Beyoncé, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Thirty Seconds to Mars have three VMA nominations apiece. The Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Lil Wayne, as well as first-time VMA nominee Tyler, the Creator all have two nods each.

Vying for Video of the Year are Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”), Tyler, the Creator (“Yonkers”), Katy Perry (“Firework”), Bruno Mars (“Grenade”), and the Beastie Boys (“Make Some Noise”).

Odd Future frontman Tyler’s “Yonkers” video, which Kanye West hailed as the best video of the year, will compete with Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”), Big Sean (“My Last”), Wiz Khalifa (“Black and Yellow”), and Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”) in the Best New Artist category.
