Famous Dex calls on A$AP Rocky for “Pick It Up,” a new track that blends soul with trap.
Over a thumping FKi instrumental, which borrows from Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr.’s “Nothing Can Stop Me,” Dex raps about his Puerto Rican girl, making dough, and selling out shows.
Coming in with a melodic flow, Flacko borrows a classic line from Dave Chappelle. “Don’t want to resort to the hands,” he raps. “What did the face say to the fist? I’m Rick James, bitch!”
Dex revealed that “Pick It Up” is a departure from his usual form. “‘Pick It Up’ was something very different for me,” he told Complex. “Especially getting ASAP [Rocky] on the record is a big, big look for me. It was kind of different. I did it, and it took time. I’m more of a freestyle rapper, and more of a new wave. I’m not like a JAY-Z writer or a Nas, so I just go in there and do my thing. I go off energy.”
In fact, Dex claims that he didn’t like the song before Rocky added his flavor to it. “I think where I recorded it at, it just sounded bullshit,” he said. “I’m like, ‘I don’t like this song, I don’t want it.’ They played it again. Guess who is on there? ASAP Rocky. I freaked the fuck out. Oh hell nah. It sounded 10 times better and everything. It was a great, great look, and it’s a great, great record. It’s a great look for me and my fans. I feel like this record right here will show the world and everybody that I accomplished something. It’s hard to get a track with ASAP Rocky.”
“Pick It Up” is a dose of what fans can expect from Famous’ forthcoming debut album, Dex Meets Dexter.
