Vic Mensa Freestyles Over Kendrick Lamar's 'HiiiPoWeR'

Fresh off the release of his debut album The Autobiography, Vic Mensa delivers a “HiiiPoWeR”-ed freestyle on “Sway in the Morning.”

Rhyming over the instrumental for Kendrick Lamar’s Section.80 closer, the Roc Nation MC kicked off his bars with Kung Fu Kenny-inspired lyrics.

“Visions of Malcolm X staring at me,” he rapped. “Out the window with the TEC, if it’s to protect my family / I stand over y’all, don’t mean you understand me / Sold grams hand-to-hand, I rap like I won a Grammy.”

Later, Vic gives a nod to K-Dot’s opening lines once again. “Visions of Huey Newton staring at me,” he raps. “I live my life behind these bars, I should be wearing khakis / I’m barely happy, my homie just caught a homicide / He tried to hang himself in a cell, he was traumatized.”

In 2011, Kendrick started two of his three “HiiiPoWeR” verses with “visions of Martin Luther staring at me” as part of the Section.80 closer. For his freestyle’s finale, Vic celebrated the J. Cole-produced song and plugged his LP.

“This always been a beat that I really, really fucked with,” he said. “Autobiography is out today / Like Frank Sinatra, did it my way / And never needed a verse from JAY-Z or Kanye.”

Featuring Weezer, The-Dream, Pharrell, Saul Williams, Pusha T, and Ty Dolla $ign, The Autobiography is out now. Recently, Mensa spoke with Rap-Up about the Malcolm X-inspired LP.

“It’s a human album,” he said. “It explores my humanity, mainly, and I leave that to the listener to make parallels to themselves. When I say that the album is my blood, sweat, and tears, and everything I’ve learned up to this point, it’s just because it literally is.”
