The drama continues.
Mary J. Blige’s estranged husband Kendu Isaacs cheated on her with their protégée and Matriarch Entertainment signee Starshell, according to Page Six.
“Everyone knew,” said one source. “Mary was the last to know, but it’s like, how do you not know?” Another added: “It was more like one of those things where you end up believing what you want to believe. But Mary had her suspicions.”
Blige met Starshell — who helped write Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” — through a producer Kendu knew. In 2010, Mary signed Starshell to her Matriarch Records label. Since then, she’s helped propel her career, bringing her to red carpet events and television appearances.
“It’s really fucked up and low to have it done to her that way,” said another source. “Had it not been for Mary signing her, investing time and money…Because no one cared about her music.”
Rumors of an affair followed. “You’d see them out in the studio together, having dinner without Mary,” said an insider. “And then Mary would be at events with her, and it was awkward because it was obvious they were sleeping together.”
In 2012, Starshell commented on the speculation. “Once you start getting hotter and hotter, or people start talking about you more and more, everything’s like soap opera life,” she said. “You’re always looking for something. If someone’s too clean or too good, they have to attach something to you, so for me, it was a compliment like, ‘Oh my God! People are talking about me. People are trying to find something.’ But I don’t know where or how that came about and it’s something that I have to take with a grain of salt.”
Blige did not mention Starshell by name in her divorce filing, but she did claim that Isaacs spent more than $420,000 on a girlfriend.
According to insiders, Isaacs was verbally abusive during his relationship with Mary. “He was verbally controlling,” said one source. “He’d say the most negative shit to her five minutes before she’d hit the stage.”
Isaacs’ lawyer, Robert Brandt, refuted the accusations. “Allegations that have been made about Kendu are false, unfair, mean-spirited and sad,” said Brandt. “The court can deal with it if it’s relevant. He’s a very pleasant guy. He’s not abusive. He’s not the one going to the press. His goal is to reach an amicable resolution with her and [have] this commentary cease and desist. It doesn’t help any of them. It’s misleading. He cares about Mary. He wants her to do well.”
Last month, Mary opened up about her frustrations with the divorce. “It’s just getting worse,” she told Angie Martinez. “It really is not getting better. It’s just more bullshit, more nonsense, more lies, more denial, more stupidity.”
Mary’s new album Strength of a Woman drops Friday (Apr. 28). A documentary on the project, The Making Of: Strength of a Woman, will follow May 2 on VH1.
