Pharrell, Lil Wayne, & Solange to Headline 10th Annual Roots Picnic

  /  02.20.2017

In honor of the 10th anniversary of The Roots Picnic, the legendary crew has unveiled this year’s star-studded lineup.

Headlined by a joint set from Pharrell and The Roots, the bill is also set to feature performances by Lil Wayne, Solange, 21 Savage, Kimbra, Thundercat, Virgil Abloh, and Michael Kiwanuka.

The Roots’ Black Thought is also slated to join J. Period for a “live mixtape” that will include appearances by Fat Joe, Mobb Deep, and former Roots band member, famed producer Scott Storch.

Pete Rock, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, James Vincent McMorrow, No Name, Khalid, and PnB Rock are also among the scheduled acts, along with Tunji Ige, DJ Spinna, Anthony Somebody, DJ N.O.C., and Gilles Peterson featuring MC Earl Zinger.

Shawn Gee, The Roots manager and Maverick Management partner, explained what makes this such a special year for Roots Picnic.

“Ten years ago this started as a concept, an idea, a conversation between me, Tarik (Black Thought), Ahmir (Questlove) and Rich (Nichols),” he said. “It’s amazing that it has grown into such a valued piece of the cultural landscape of our hometown of Philadelphia. We were blessed to expand the Picnic to NYC last year, and the brand will continue to grow and evolve, but Philly will ALWAYS be the home, the birthplace of the Roots Picnic. We are super excited to bring a packed lineup to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and as always there will be plenty of surprises and special guests.”

Last night, The Roots performed a mini musical during the player introductions at the NBA All-Star Game. They were joined onstage by Michael B. Jordan, Jidenna, and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C.

This year’s Roots Picnic is scheduled to take place June 3 at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. Tickets are on sale now.
