Chance the Rapper gets nostalgic in the Muppet-filled music video for “Same Drugs,” the latest single off his critically-lauded mixtape Coloring Book.
Shot using vintage camera effects, the Jake Schreier-directed clip begins with Chano playing the piano next to a Muppet-like songstress. Together, they sing the serious yet endearing song about past drug issues and newfound happiness.
When the performance ends, snow falls, and the Chi-town spitter stands up, walks out, and the vintage veil is lifted for an updated, HD-look. It closes with Chano walking off the set as Muppets continue working around him.
The visual for “Same Drugs” premiered on Facebook Live, a feat that Chance says was not easy to accomplish. “Y’all know I’m very good friends with all these folks at the tech companies,” he said on Twitter. “Why when I ask these ni**as if I can premiere a video on a live joint, they told me no?”
According to the Grammy-nominated MC, he went to Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook before the latter agreed to premiere his clip in high definition.
Muppets have been a staple of Chance’s onstage show. In fact, he performed with a cast of Muppet characters on the “Magnificent Coloring Book Tour” last year.
Next up, Chance is set to perform at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, where he is nominated seven times.
